36 Crazyfists Artist - 36 Crazy Fists
Album - A Snowcapped Romance
Label - Roadrunner Records (2004)
Reviewer - Marc Halverson
Rating - ****
36 Crazy Fists are back with their sophomore effort "A Snowcapped Romance," which displays extreme growth musically and showcases the band coming into their own on this record. According to vocalist Brock Lindow, "The last record (Bitterness The Star – 2002) had more depressing subject matter…We realized we needed to write more positive material." "A Snowcapped Romance" may be compared to recent acts such as Ill Nino, Killswitch Engage, and 40 Below Summer, but this album "promises to thrust the band to the forefront of the screamo/ post-hardcore movement," (Roadrunner Biography).

"At the End of August", is an aggressive and fast-paced song about friendships that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Next, "The Heart and the Shape" is a great display of melodic meeting emo at its best. Personally, it is my favorite track on the album. Moving along, "Bloodwork" is a solid song with a catchy riff and tight melodic vocals. "Kenai" is another fast and heavy hitting track that will definitely ignite any pit when they play it live. The album continues to demonstrate their ability to move right through the album with ease and perfecting a unique sound of melody and screamo. Other tracks that stand out are "With Nothing Underneath", "Installing the Catheter" and the album closes with "Waterhaul," a dark sounding track that transitions from peaceful to chaotic instantly and then slowly fades away.

36 Crazy Fists have definitely found the right formula with "A Snowcapped Romance". The music is tighter and more focused, while Brock has become comfortable with a unique vocal style that is complimentary to the music. 36 Crazy Fists have been together for a while (hometown is Alaska) and now that they primarily reside in Portland, Oregon, is even more of a reason to be a fan of these guys! Go out and pick up a copy of "A Snowcapped Romance" and check 36 Crazy Fists when they come through your city.
