With her solo offering, Lucia Cifarelli has once and for all proved that she is a diverse artist. Formerly known as the vocalist for the alternative rock outfit Drill, and maybe even more known as the most recent female vocalist for KMFDM, Lucia finally spreads her wings with >From the Land of Volcanos and shows the world her own unique style.
FTLOV is a lighthearted electro pop album bent on highlighting Lucia’s phenomenal vocal abilities. It offers an impressive list of collaborators including Eric Bazilian, Patrick Leonard of Madonna fame, and of course KMFDM’s Sascha Konietzko and William Rieflin, just to name a few. Throughout the album, it displays Lucia’s powerful and dramatic vocals, and it shows what a rock goddess she truly is.
As a whole, it is much less aggressive then the work you have seen from her before, and I think that’s a good change for her, a challenging demonstration of her true abilities. Don’t let the melodies fool you though, she still shows off her aggressive side in songs like “Monkey Puzzle Tree”, (which also has a bonus remix with kmfdm) and “What You Become” which shows her heavier side as well. She slows it down a bit for songs like the aching “Northern Star”, “Fear” with its piano driven melody, and “Little Rose”, one of my personal favorites. More danceable, pop influenced songs are “We Are Angels” and “Feels Like Summer”.
Overall, From The Land of Volcanoes seems to be a product of Lucia rising out of her own ashes and discovering herself, a reflection of the past and a hope for the future.
