"I surrender to invention and to the muses and just kind of let them lead me where they want to go, and sometimes it's to dark and dangerous places. In the song "Requiem", I can actually hear a piece of me dying. It's terrifying in many ways to hear a part of yourself surrendering and dying and yet finding a new skin to wear."…..Otep
Last year during Ozzfest, I was driving in the mountains from California to Seattle and I was scanning the channels when all of a sudden this massive voice comes shattering out of the speakers. After the song, I heard the DJ say the words Otep. Later after seeing their website I was further amazed; by the poetry, the music, and the band itself, particularly vocalist Otep.
Describing Otep isn't something easily done. The name itself is an anagram of the word poet, but the music is pure, raw, primal, violent, and poetic, nothing short of throat wrenching symphonic rage.
The band gained instant notoriety after being added to Ozzfest virtually unsigned and with no record, and went on to release their debut full length album, Sevas Tra, which is also an anagram that uniquely describes the message behind the band Otep – Art Saves.
Dangerous. Violent. Beautiful. Creative Genius. These are all words I would use to describe Otep Shamaya, the vocalist of Otep.
