Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Cyber-Jack has released “The Great Red Spot” to acclaim in Brazil as well as the US. The CD is a follow up to their debut EP “Reluctant Aliens”. The band mixes early sounds of Guns N’ Roses with more alternative rock style reminiscent of Nirvana and perhaps a smidgen of Nine Inch Nails thrown in for good measure. Released through the bands own Surprise Records the CD is 12 tracks of good aggressive rock with their own ethnic flare. The album was produced and mixed by the band and the recording preserved the integrity of their true sound.
The music is spawned from the chaos and violence of the Third World where the homicide rate is astronomical and violence is an every day occurrence. From this chaos, a sound is born that is both powerful and intense with a volatile edge and a raw energetic delivery. The sound is aggressive but with a more rock edge then a heavier metal sound. I think it’s interesting how they have blended a classic rock sound with the more alternative grunge era rock. It’s an odd combination but it seems to work well for Cyber-Jack. It took a second listen to grow on me because there is just so much going on it takes a while to take it all in. The vocals express a diverse range and the music has a dynamic rhythm section tied together by powerful percussion.
Highlights from the 12 tracks include the edgy “Dopamine Days”, with its primal drums and heavy bass lines and the mellower track” Blame Game” which sounds ripe for radio airplay and my own personal favorite “Red Wax” that has almost an Alice in Chains vibe to it in certain parts.
The package also included a bonus CD that contains multimedia including a bio, pictures, live videos and the bands lyrics as well as some live and remix versions of songs off the album and even a Dope cover tune. It definitely made my job easier to have all the information close at hand, I wish all the bands I dealt with were that prepared.
