Miles Beyond is a four-piece band hailing from Flint, Michigan and laying claim to a classic metal feel, reminiscent of bands like Iron Maiden, Dio, and Queensryche. The music is progressive and has that theatrical feel to it that a band in this genre must possess. The vocals provided by Tim Moody are outstanding, melodic and flowing with an impressive range displayed throughout almost every song.
Opening track “Out of Control” is a vocal stunner, but the instrumentation is also very remarkable with well-timed changes and great timing. It contains memorable riffs and a catchy chorus. The next track “Tales Of Old” has a little more modern edge to it and features the dueling guitars of Tim Moody and Paul O. They drift into serious Maiden influences in tracks like “Take Me Back Home” and “Vlad the Impaler” a song written about the historical Dracula. There has to be an epic ballad sandwiched in here somewhere and we find it in “The Spaniard” which kind of meanders through the harmony and grabs you with its flashy guitar work. The more modern “Rock Revolution” has kind of a Priest feel to it and I kind of liked the tribal bent on “Crazy Horse” and the crescendo at the end of “A Call To Odin” is a solid ending.
Maybe best described as traditional power metal, for some this might be dated, but if you are a fan of the genre this is a gem. Good old European influenced American progressive metal. Even though I’m not a huge fan of this style of music, It’s good to know bands like this still exist.
