Thr3efold got its beginning in the central valley area of California back in 2001. Frontman Jason James and former drummer Chuck Gaither were part of a local band called Serial Killher and didn’t have a functional bass player. They encountered Jimbo, one of the areas most phenomenal low-end specialists, formerly of the bands Solo, Carcinogen (now Depswa), and Mad Cow Industries. Jimbo is a respected studio musician in the area and in 2002 won the Energy Muzik award for best Bass Player of the year. It was a perfect match between Jason and Jimbo who soon realized that they were able to blend their styles to create something that could dominate the local metal scene.
Eventually the band parted ways with Chuck Gaither and in 2004 found Tristen Costa, a rare find that allowed them to jell as a group and solidify their sound. The band began writing music together and creating talented, hook oriented metal masterpieces that demanded attention from the local music scene as well as generating a bigger buzz throughout California.
Thr3efold takes influence from such musical powerhouses as Tool, Slayer, King Crimson, System Of a Down, and Yes. The band released their full length independent sophomore release titled “Respect” and soon gained the attention of Jager Music to obtain a coveted slot as a Jager band. Soon after the band also received endorsements from Basson Sound Equipment and Adler Custom Bass Guitars. Thr3efold was nominated two years in a row for best metal band at the prestigious Modesto Area Music Awards.
Their music is dynamic and intense, a raw blistering fury that will shake you to your very core. Its hard to believe that massive wall of sound is coming from only three players. Respect isn’t just the name of the album they have delivered either; it’s their life’s motto, it’s the creed they live by. For More information go to www.thr3efold.net.
Interview with California’s Thr3efold
By Robin Steeley
Crave: Tell me about the Thr3efold came together in the beginning, and how it ended up in its current incarnation?
Thr3efold: I, (Jason), and Chuck needed a bass player for a band we had called
"Serial Killher". We got in touch with Jimbo; I had noticed him in the area before and I knew he wasn’t in a band now. So, Jimbo came out and jammed. Things worked out perfectly. We played a gig in Sacramento at a place called the Hogs Head Brewery. It was a bloody night. After this show, we decided to change the name and ended up with Thr3efold. We have been through two drummers, one of them twice and now on our third and final,
Tristen Costa. Since our birth as a band, we have been through a lot. We have experimented with many kinds of music, which has brought us to who we are now.
Crave: Is there a story behind the name Thr3efold?
Thr3efold: Well, we have thr3e guys in the band and believe that what comes around goes around so it seemed appropriate.
Crave: If pinned, how would you best describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music?
Thr3efold: Experimental, heavy, melodic, catchy chops and stops. A lot of live improvs every show so not every show is the same!!
Crave: Who are the bands biggest influences? How about yours, personally?
Thr3efold: SLAYER, Crowbar, Pantera, King Crimson, Tool, Lamb of God, Black
Sabbath, Iron Maiden, our lives and families!!
Crave: What was the first album you ever bought?
Thr3efold: Jimbo - Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind, Jason - AC/DC - Back In Black,
Crave: What do you do to prepare for a show; do you have any before show rituals?
Thr3efold: We sacrifice Catholic virgins.
Crave: What is the writing process like; does the music come first or the lyrics?
Thr3efold: The Music then the lyrics come later. Jason comes with the main riff, and then everyone feeds off that.
Crave: If you could pick your dream line up for a Thr3efold show what
would it be?
Thr3efold: Slayer, Lamb of God, Tool, Pantera, and Thr3efold.
Crave: What's currently happening with the band?
Thr3efold: We are now working on new material, looking to a tour with our new drummer, diving deeper into our writing process. Our fan base is growing and we are getting a great response, which is helping us create more energy in our writing.
Crave: What are your goals for the near future?
Thr3efold: Getting our new CD out, a lot of radio play, touring, supporting local music, grow as a band.
Crave: Is there anything else you think the world should know about Thr3efold?
Thr3efold: Request Thr3efold at all your local radio stations!!! The world should know the name Thr3efold!!!!!!!!!!!!!
