Falling Closer, Domeshots, Syx, and Five Foot Thick
By Elana Siau
The streets of Portland were alive as usual, and the line was up the street for the turnout at the Paris Theatre on 1/29. An all ages venue, minors made up the majority- and they were painted, eager, and ready for a show. Starting out the night was Falling Closer, a band of Portland guys tearing it up. They had great stage presence, with a grinding, hard-core element set off well by the arrangements. Their sound was just what the evening needed to kick off a great line up.
Following up was Domeshots from Oakland, CA. with a warped style all their own you can’t help but dig. They put on a fabulous show with great music and lyrics; a show one shouldn’t miss if given the chance to see. They concluded their set by performing a song w/ Ben, the lead singer of Portland’s own, SYX, which kicked ass. Domeshots is a great band altogether.
Then came Spokane’s Five Foot Thick. What can I say? They fucking thrash and I love it. They are so tight instrumentally, flawless actually (and I listen well). With their use of various instruments, sometimes 2 guitars, then keyboards, and extra percussion to add to their already powerful and strong rhythmic grind, it just tops the icing on the cake of an awesome band. I look forward to seeing them again and again.
And lastly, the almighty SYX. With an intense energy, they are a band you must see perform to get the full experience. They also played a song from their upcoming work that was most impressive and I can’t wait to hear the rest. Oh, and when you go and see them play, watch the air Ben gets when he’s singing, he’s up there, quite gravity defying if I say so myself. For a small fee of $8, the bands did exactly what they set out to do-
rocked the f#@%ing joint, and it was money well spent.
