60 Grit
By Joe Prophet

Here’s one for ya, a rock, blues, jazz, and yes, a touch of rap band, and where are they from you ask? Portland of course. I went out to Conan’s to check out 60 Grit on Friday, and was I ever pleased with what I heard, and saw. It was apparent right away that these folks are the real deal, from the first song to the last, 60 Grit takes you on a journey of smooth, powerful and thundering sound.

The lead vocals are shared by Sarah Moon, and Steven Bak. Sarah, a classically trained vocalist, can grab your heart one minute, and then your balls the next, this girl has a set of pipes I haven’t heard in quite some time, and believe me guys, it’s hard to keep from staring at her also. Steven Bak shares lead vocal’s, and has been playing keyboards. Since age 6, and let me tell you it shows, this guy was awesome, and magic on the ivory’s.

Michael Engeholm plays a guitar playing style that is hard to explained, he can cover 5 different blends of music in one song, I was mesmerized at times, a true talent for sure. Peter Abrams, has been banging on the bass of 15 years, and you can feel it all the way to your toes, it’s not hard to see that Peter is one of the founding members of the band, and is very passionate about its sound.

Kyle MacLowery, what can I say, the guy is a master percussionist, I couldn’t get many pictures of him back there, but he is indeed a huge force in the band, going from smooth jazzy sound to a rifling hard rock wailer.

I was truly sad to see this band end there set, I could have stayed all night watching and listening to these guys. Robin, you can send me to see this band all you want! Maybe they will even send me a copy of that Demo cd they have out.

Peace
