Artist - Tin Foil Phoenix
Album - Living in the Shadow of the Bat
Label - Roadrunner/604 Records
Reviewer - Robin Steeley
I think Tin Foil Phoenix is a different signing for Roadrunner, but it just shows how they are branching out into new directions and different genres. Especially after the success of Nickelback, this newly signed Canadian band is sure to pick up where they left of. But don’t mistake this band for a copy, although Chad Kroeger does show up in production credits and originally signed the band to his label. They sound nothing like their fellow compatriots; they have their own distinct and unique style, which is a blend of melodic rock, and nu-metal that is heavily bass led and features dynamic vocals and guitars.
Some of the best tracks on this release are the opener “Neapolitan” which has some interesting spoken parts and great choruses. This is followed by more hip-hop influenced songs like “Bum Rush the Motorcade” which has the hip-hop flavor but is heavily influenced by rocks underlying base. At other times, the band reminds me of a funkier Incubus in songs like “James Spader”.
Overall this was a great rock listen, and while I don’t think it will make album of the year, it’s a great start for this Canadian band, showcases their talent, and gives a good listen to any fans of this straightforward funk infused rock music.
