Riding the fine line between moody alt-rock and chunky nu-metal, Kustem blends tasty, heavy riffs with well-crafted melodies on this debut ep.
The comfortable-sounding musicianship doesn't necessarily break new ground, but thoughtfully combines the best elements of the tried and true: groovy, funky riff-rock and bubble gum sensibility. Threatening to sound like more radio-friendly filler, the boys in Kustem manage to keep things interesting and unique by mixing it up with creative breaks and out-of-nowhere vocal blasts.
The highlight of the self-titled 4 song ep is 'Surfacing Light'. Travis Burke shows off his impressive pipes with soaring vocal lines delivered with power, control and passion. The band's under-stated craftsmanship nicely compliments his emotionally-charged lyrics as he breaks out just enough thunder to make you appreciate the diversity and range of his voice.
The rhythm section of Will Sheppy and Dusty Spivey provide a fluid, versatile foundation while Trent Nunn and Seth Bates guitar work adds delicate texture and color to make undeniably catchy, tight and powerful songs. Produced by Rob Stroup, this ep is a great example of quality songwriting focusing on substance and style over flash and fad.
Never over-bearing or forced, this band is instantly likable with it's passionate delivery of heavy, smooth, melodic metal with hints of Chris Cornell vocals and Ozzy-smart riffs.
