Where was Obituary?....they were ‘Frozen In Time”.
After many years of waiting, Florida death metal outfit Obituary is finally back. ‘Frozen In Time’ will be released on 7/19/05 and will be the bands first studio album in seven years. Obituary is legendary as a death metal giant and has returned to claim their right to the death genre throne with an album that blows away anything they have ever done before. This is the bands sixth studio effort and its released on notorious Roadrunner Records.
The album opens with the unlikely named instrumental piece “Redneck Stomp” which is a thrashing opening to ten solid metal tracks. Its followed by “On The Floor” where those infamous guttural vocals take over before it heads into a crushing breakdown mid song. The fact that this band took a six-year break is not apparent anywhere in these songs. “Blindsided” is slower building and full of crunchy metal guitar. My personal favorite was the slow throbbing crawl in the middle of “Stand Alone” and the inevitable creep of “Slow Death”.
This is a great comeback album, an impressive effort. I think Obituary is going to bridge the gap between old school metal heads and the generation of kids just being turned on to metal. They have a modern yet still unerringly heavy sound.
