Swil is one of those bands that upon hearing for the first time you think “What the hell kind of music is this” but within seconds it begins to grow on you, and this latest release of theirs is no different. It’s a feel good party album that requires no serious brain function to listen to, just steady driving rock and roll.
Opening with a two-minute long instrumental intro that feels a little bluesy, the band then rocks right into “Failure” which is one of my favorite tracks off this release. It is always a huge crowd favorite live. It has such diverse vocals and the guitar is not afraid to take risks, playing at breakneck speed. The next tune, “Juggernaut” is even faster, and has some really sludgy bass rhythms that fit the song well. Most of the songs are fast, and there are several highlights, but my favorite track is the one I want you to check out first “I Can’t Feel My Face” track nine and also the longest song out of the ten tracks. There are so many changes in this one track you wont be able to keep up. It breaks down into a ballad mid song, before thumping into the last grooving little bass heavy track “Justify”.
Although the production is far from perfect, this is a great effort from the Portland natives. I will always believe that Swil is a rockin’ live band, and you have to see their performance to believe it, but regardless of whether or not you make it out to a show, pick this CD up and get to know the music.
