Had a hard week at the office? Is the boss giving you shit? Are you looking to blow off some steam by going out, getting drunk, getting into some bar-fights, whore around, go get into a high speed police chase, and wake up the next day next to some aristocrats daughter with a drilling hangover having not remembered what trouble you got into the night before? If so, then First it Boils, Then it Spills, the debut release from the Columbus, Ohio quartet the Evils Queens will no doubt provide an apt backdrop for a wild binge of intoxicated debauchery. Evil Queens aim to please with their prog-minded hybrid of stoner metal and all out grit topped with a splash of the troublemaking aura cut from the cloth of the early Motorhead records.
“Valentine” is fitting background music for a crime-spree laden road trip across the nation as George Hondroullis’ nodular beats crash into a rhythm that brings back thoughts of Helmet on the corrosive stride of “And Hell”. “The Government Has Cloned You” collides like a twenty car pile up in rush hour traffic as singer Mike Eckhardt screams to the point of breathing fire on the screeching intensity of “New Keys”. “Strong Wristed Woman” treds into the terrain of the sun-baked desert aura similar to Kyuss as “The Theme from Donovan” contains a psychedelically laced treble alongside a ritualistic Eastern vibe.
The Evil Queens are most assuredly a band to keep you eyes on with a sound is defiantly genuine and raw. While throwing in elements of metal, riff-rock, and punk, the Evil Queens go beyond being categorized as they can take can take every bit of insubordination from just about any sub-genre of rock and roll and give it their own unique touch that can remain precise while raining down brimstone and hellfire all at once.
