I wasn’t sure what to expect from “Misfits Meet The Nutley Brass”, produced by John Cafiero. An unlikely mixture of horror punk rock legends the Misfits and the jazz lounge stylings of The Nutley Brass, I can’t say after listening to the entire album twice that I have yet made up my mind. I got the CD back from a reviewer who absolutely hated it; he felt that it was a misguided attempt at a new avenue of getting money out of Misfits fans. I can’t say that I don’t believe there is any truth to his feelings, although I didn’t run his review because I didn’t feel like answering hate mail for the next year, so I decided to give it a listen and write it myself.
My take on the whole thing? You can’t take it too seriously. Its hilarious, the whole thing has a carnival, big brassy, almost gaudy, feel to it that is just too much. Imagine getting into an elevator and hearing this music. Unless you are a die-hard collector that owns every piece of work by the band, I don’t know how appealing this would be to either Misfits or Nutley Brass fans, but if you are into strange music, this might be for you. I don’t love it, but I didn’t actually hate it either. I just kind of shook my head in awe and wondered, “what will they come up with next?” Give it a listen but don’t try to take it too seriously.
