Granite Records is prepared to release Orange Sky’s “Upstairs” on September 13th, and I imagine there will be quick success for this band. They are melodic rock with a unique flair and catchy songs. This Trinidad based quintet has a refreshing sound that doesn’t sound formulated yet the songs are cohesive and well thought out. They achieved major success in the Caribbean and independently sold 10,000 CD’s, propelling them to the next level and bringing them to the attention of the Granite label, which was founded by its three managing directors, music industry veteran Dave Austin, Cathy Austin, and Kansas drummer Phil Ehart. The label is distributed by Fontana, a Universal Music Group family.
The album was produced by Jeff Glixman (Kansas, Paul Stanley, Black Sabbath) with his extensive list of impressive projects including 5.1 surround sound remixes of classic albums by Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers, and Ludacris. Each band member has a share in the vocal duties creating for a diverse sound that is constantly changing. Some of the highlight songs on this offering are the catchy “It’s Over”, the rocking “Escape” and an interesting cover of Cat Stevens classic “Peace Train”.
The songs are powerful rock with an edge, and plenty of melody woven in. Having just reviewed fourteen CD’s, this is one of the few that actually stood out above all the screamo bands congesting the industry.
