Style Wars Style Wars
By Noah Henderson

Style Wars is a 1982 documentary on graffiti and the life that surrounded it. It has great cinematography and good concept. I found it interesting how in the film they pin pointed the founder of writing, bombing , in this day and age called tagging. It was a kid named Taki. Taki 183 was his tag. In the film the mayor at the time Edward Koch said that bombers where in the same ball park as thieve, pic pockets and common criminals. I found that though these kids where defacing public property many of them where vary passionate about the work they did. And shit, most of it was awesome. In the film it seemed that these bombers where escaping reality by expression in graffiti. It was really cool to see 14 and 16 year old kids with such a strong grasp on what they felt was right. Also a spot light in the film was the raw street appeal. Such in your face with no script. Holding it down for the street and nothing else. You get a real good idea of just where breaking, hip hop and the street life came from. And most of all, Graffiti. If this is your cup of tea I would suggest getting a 40 oz of old-E, mixing it up with a bit of O.J., pouring some out for your homies and watching the film.
Enjoy the film and the brass monkey.
That's it for now.
Noah
